SSA Transition to Electronic Payments FAQ

Starting September 30, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will no longer issue paper checks for benefit payments.

This change is part of a broader government-wide initiative to modernize payment systems and enhance service delivery. By moving to electronic payments exclusively, SSA aims to improve efficiency and security and ensure beneficiaries receive their monthly benefits promptly.

You will need to switch to electronic payments. You can do this by setting up direct deposit into your EdFed account. For more information on how to make the switch, you can refer to the Social Security Administration portal or log in to your personal my Social Security account online.

Yes, you can contact SSA toll-free at 1-800-772-1213.
